Leinster U12/U13/Jun/U23 Championships, Navan, 28th May
The Leinster Championships for the U12, U13, Jun (U20) and U23 age categories were held in Navan on Sunday. Bree athletes were once again successful, and rounded off what has been a very successful month for the club. Having won the U18 multievent title on Saturday, Aine Doyle moved up to junior level, where she finished 3rd in the 100m hurdles (17.78).
There were nine U13 athletes from the club competing and 7 of them qualified for the All Ireland finals in individual events, by finishing in 4th place or higher. Eleanor Nolan collected a complete set of medals having finished 1st in the long jump, 2nd in the ball throw and 3rd in the shot putt. Amy Flanaghan, Anne Marie Kane and Dylan Walsh have also qualified for the All Ireland Championships in three events each.
Wexford also won both U13 intercounty relays. Eleanor Nolan and Amy Flanagan picked up gold medals with the girls team, while Tony Stafford, Dylan Walsh and Conor Devereux formed part of the winning boys team. Elaine McCabe and Tony Stafford were unfortunate not to gain national individual qualification, both having picked up 5th place finishes. Tony did however have the cosolation of winning a relay medal.

Leinster Multievent Championships, Navan, 27th May
Bree AC had 3 athletes competing at the Leinster Multievents Championships in Navan yesterday, and all three won gold medals.
Catriona Corcoran rounded off an excellent month in which she won 5 county titles, 2 Leinster schools titles and two Leinster club relay medals, to win the under 14 girls pentathlon. Catriona's winning score was 2581, 126 points clear of runner-up Laura Langton (Kilkenny City Harriers). Catriona won the long jump (4.82) and the high jump (1.42), the two events that she won at Leinster schools championships last week, as well as the shot putt (9.83), though she her best performance from a scoring point of view was the hurdles in which she finished second to Laura, the new Leinster schools hurdles champion. Like all true multieventers, the 800m was Catriona's weakest event by her own very high standards.
Áine Doyle and Brendan Culleton, who also showed great form at the recent county championships, took their respective U18 titles. With wins in the 100m hurdles (17.2) and 200m (28.6), Áine's score of 2715, took her well clear of Emer McTaggert (Boyne AC). Brendan secured his third successive Leinster title when he won the U18 boys octathlon. Brendan's best events were the hurdles (14.8); 200m (23.9) and the 1000m (2:58.5) and he will now hope to add to the All Ireland U16 title he won in 2004.
The All Ireland multi events championships will take place in Tullamore on 29th and 30th of July and no doubt both Áine and Brendan will be glad that their events will be held over two days on that occasion.

Leinster Juvenile Relays, Kilkenny, 21st May
Bree Athletes once again had a successful Leinster Relay Championships. Despite an untimely clash with National Community Games Finals in Mosney which stripped the club of many of its competitors, Bree AC managed to take home 10 sets of medals.
Bree Girls won gold in the U15 competition and silver in the U9, U10, U13 and U14 relays. The boys won the U9, U10, U11 events; finished second in the U13 and U16 races and took bronze in the U14 competition. Well done to all concerned.
Unfortunately the club were unable to retain the Heir Sheild that they have won at the last three editions of the juvenile relay championship, finishing second to Kilkenny City Harriers on this occasion.

On Saturday Brendan Culleton (CBS Enniscorthy) finished off what was a successful Leinster Schools Championships for Bree AC Athletes. Leinster Schools Championships Day 1, Santry, 17th May
The first day of the Leinster Schools were held in Santry on Wednesday and Bree AC athletes were once again to the fore. Five medals were won by members of the club in what is one of the most competitive championships for athletes of this age. The highlight of the day was Caitriona Corcoran’s double gold in the minor High Jump and Long Jump. Caitriona, (Loreto Wexford), was a clear winner of both events, jumping 4.62 to win the LJ by a whopping 30 centimetres and winning the HJ by 3 centimetres with a clearance of 1.44. Former Bree AC athlete Clara Thompson won double gold in the discus and shot putt at all five Leinster Schools championships between 1993 and 1997. Perhaps Caitriona can go on to emulate Clara’s achievements at this level!
Sarah Shovlin (Loreto Wexford) was joint 2nd in the junior High Jump with a clearance of 1.44 and Ciara Flanagan (Coláiste Bríd Enniscorthy) finished 3rd in the junior girls hammer. Both have qualified for the All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore on 3rd June
William Spratt-Murphy (St Mary’s CBS Enniscorthy) did well given the circumstances to finish 3rd in the Intermediate 400mH, but will be disappointed that illness prevented him from finishing in the top two and qualifying for the All Ireland Finals. William will be competing in the 200m on Saturday.
Áine Doyle (Loreto Wexford) finished just outside the medals in 4th place in both the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles in the senior age category. Sinéad Moloney (Coláiste Bríd Enniscorthy) was 5th in the Intermediate girls 80m Hurdles.

County Championships Results
Well done to the many athletes from the club who won medals at the county championships recently. Fourty-five Bree AC athletes won individual medals and many more were involved in the club's successful relay teams. Bree won 15 of the 18 relays contested. It was a particularly good championships for Áine Doyle who won eight U18 titles and for Caitriona Corcoran (U14), William Spratt-Murphy (U17) and Brendan Culleton (U18) who each collected 5 individual gold medals in their age categories. The small numbers in the U17, U18 and U19 categories is, however, of great concern for the future of athletics in Wexford. Áine, William, Brendan, Claire Farrell, Sinead Moloney and Anna Nolan also picked up medals at senior level. There was a Bree clean sweep in the U13 girls LJ, the U15 girls 100m, 200m, Javelin and discus, the U19 girls hammer throw and the senior women’s 200m and hammer throw.

Upcoming Leinster Championships
The 2006 Leinster Track & Field Championships get underway this weekend with the juvenile relay championships in Kilkenny. The club will be hoping to add to the 48 relay titles they have already won since 1981 and to retain the Hehir Shield they have won for the best club at the championships for the past three years. The club have 15 teams entered for Sunday. Last year they took 7 sets of gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze; the U17 boys 4 x 100m, U19 boys 4 x 400m and U19 boys 4 x 100m went on to win medals at All Ireland level. Some interesting facts:
- The club have won the U9 boys event 4 times since it was first held in 2000 - in 2001 and 2003 they won bronze.
- The current U18 and U19 boys groups have won medals in the 4 x 100m every year since they were U11.
- Last years U19 boys group won medals in their age group every year since 1998 (4 x 100m) and since 2003 (4 x 400m)
- On three previous occasions the club has won two sets of medals in the same race.
- Richard Dunne has won 13 medals at these championships, Jean Redmond has won 12 and Ben Hunt, William Buttler, Sinead Griffith, Peter Roche and Niamh Leacy have 11 each.
The following weekend, the multi-event championships, the U12 and U13 championships and the Junior and U23 championships will be held in Navan and we hope to be well represented in all three championships.
The club has been particularly successful in the multi-events over the past few years. Brendan Culleton will hope to add to the U16 title he won in 2004 and the U17 title he won in 2005. Sinéad Moloney, the current indoor U18 champion will hope to improve on her U16 bronze medal from last year. Aine Doyle and Catriona Corcoran also won medals at this year's All Ireland indoor multi-events championships and should do well.
- The club has won 36 medals at these championships, 13 of them gold.
- Athletes from the club have also won 12 All Ireland multi-events medals, 5 of them gold, since Elizabeth Egan won the club's first (U17 gold) in 1996.
The senior and Masters Championships will be held in Tullamore on 4th June. Niall Sheil has been entered in both the 800m and 1500m and may double up, while John Egan will be aiming to improve on the bronze medal he won in the 5,000m walk last year. If you would also like to take part, contact
Eliz for further details.
The U9-U11 Award Scheme will be held in St. Abbain's on Sunday 11th June, the U14-U19 Championships in Tullamore on 17th and 18th of June and the Juvenile team event for U11, U12, U13 and U15s in Kilkenny on Sunday June 25th. The club were best club at the U9-U11 Award Scheme last year. If you would like to take part in any of these events contact Clare, Paul or Una.
A full Programme of events for the Leinster Championships is available on the Athletics Leinster Website. Note that there have been some changes to this years events. The Steeplechase has been added for U18, U19, Junior and Senior women and will be held as a combined race in Navan on 28th May. Full details of changes to Leinster Championships
These facts and figures used in this article are based on results that we have collated, and while every attempt is made to ensure the accuracy of these results, details from the early years of the club may be missing. Race opportunities for Senior Athletes
There are lots of races coming up for senior athletes. The season kicks off with the AAI Games in Ringsend on Sunday. The Leinster, Munster and Ulster Senior Championships are open events, and with electronic timing and wind readings available, they provide ideal opportunity to record official personal bests or to break a
club record. Last year John Egan won medals at all 3 championships and he will be hoping to repeat that feat this year. The Leinster Senior and Vet Championships take place in Tullamore on 4th June (More Details), the Northern Ireland and Ulster Championships will be held on 10th June at Mary Peters in Belfast (More Details) and on 18th June the Munster Senior Championships will be staged at CIT Track in Cork (More Details). The Leinster Junior and U23 Championships will be held in Navan next weekend (21st May). If you would like to take part in any of these events please contact Eliz for further details.
The National Junior and U23 Championships will be in Tullamore on 2nd July and the National Senior Championships in Santry on 22nd and 23rd of July. John Egan, will again be aiming for a podium finish in the national senior 10km walk. A full preview of these events will be posted once entries have been finalised. Other senior championship dates include: National Multi Event Championships, Navan 10-11 June; National Senior Relay Championships, Navan, 11th June and Dublin International Games, Santry, 29th July. The domestic season will draw to a close with the National League Finals in Tullamore on 20th of August. If you are available to compete on 16th July of 6th of August and would like to help Wexford reach these finals, please let us know.
Dublin Athletics Board hold open graded meets every second Wednesday night and these provided a good opportunity for athletes of all abilities to assess their form. Further details and timetables can be found on the Dublin Athletics Website. The Irish Milers Club and Northern Ireland Athletics Federation also host graded meets for all abilities. There will be plenty of road races over various distances around the country during the summer, and lots of open races in the UK for anyone short of competition. Check out the Fixtures Page for more details.
For the more ambitious among us, the IAAF World Junior Championships will be held in Beijing in August (Entry Standards) and the EAA European Senior Championships will be in Gothenburg, Sweden from 7th to 13th of August (Entry Standards).

outside the juvenile ranks, and only the third individual gold medal for Bree at National indoor level. Clara Thompson's U18 SP gold in 1997, and
Sinéad Moloney's U18 multi-events title earlier this year, have been our only other individual successes to date at this level.
Hopefully it is the first of many national titles for Adrian. Adrian also finished 4th in the 200m.
Well done also to the 4 x 200m team of Adrian Jackman, Brendan Culleton, William Spratt-Murphy and William Buttler
who got their first taste of senior competition when competing in the AAI National Senior Indoor Relay Championships in
Nenagh on Sunday (19th March). Despite running 6 seconds faster than they did when wining the Leinster Junior Indoor Championships,
the lads were unable to make the final, but will have gained valuable experience competing against their senior counterparts.
Adrian warms up for busy weekend
Adrian Jackman warmed up for this weekend’s AAI National Junior Indoor Championships and National Senior Relay Championships,
when competing for his college, Waterford Institute of Technology, at the Munster Intervarsity Championships in Nenagh
yesterday (15th March). Adrian had a busy day, competing in the 60mH, 200m, 60m, HJ and 4 x 200m relay, and picking up 4 medals along the way.
His best performance was in the 60m hurdles where he finished 2nd in a time of 9.5 seconds (hand timed). Adrian will next represent WIT at the national
intervarsity championships in Antrim on 21st and 22nd of April.
Adrian will compete in the 60mH and 200m, the two events at which he won Leinster gold, at the Junior Champs on
Saturday and will be joined by William Buttler, William Spratt-Murphy and Brendan Culleton on Sunday when they compete
in the 4 x 200m relay. We wish them success.
Elsewhere, Niall Sheil returned to the roads after a indoor season in which he set two personal bests, when competing in
the Dungarvan 10 km on Sunday. Niall finished 11th in a time of 36.57 minutes
Leinster Indoor C'ships Day 2 & 3, Nengah, 4-5 Mar 2006

Bree AC members. In total over the three days, 31 individual medals were brought back to the club, along with 9 sets of relay medals.

Sinéad and Ben to receive Awards
Congratulations to club athletes Sinéad Moloney and Ben Hunt who have recently been recognised for their achievements in
athletics.
Sinéad will be awarded the Wexford athlete of the month award for January at an awards function in the Stanville Lodge
Hotel on Wed 1st March, and in doing so will become the third athlete from the club to be honoured with this award since its
inception last April. Sinéad’s achievements for January include individual gold (U17 60mH) and silver (U17 HJ), and relay gold (Junior 4 x 200m
relay) at the Leinster indoor championships; and gold in the AAI national U18 indoor pentathlon.
Ben has been named as the Wexford winner of the AAI national All Star award for 2005 and will receive his award at a
gala function in the Arklow Bay Hotel on 11th March. Ben, who also won All Star awards at Leinster level in 2003, 2004 and 2005, becomes the 4th
Bree athlete to win the national award. Clara Thompson (1997), John Walker (2000) and Marcella Cullen (2003) were the
previous winners from the club. Ben’s achievements for 2005 included national medals at U19 level in the 400mH (bronze), TJ (indoors, bronze),
HJ (indoors, bronze) and multievents (silver). Ben was also a member of the Bree U19 relay teams which picked up national medals at 4 x100m,
4 x 200m (indoor) and 4 x 400m.
Well done to both athletes on their achievements and we wish them well in the future.
AAI National Senior Indoor Championships, Belfast, 18-19 Feb 2006
Niall Sheil was the only Bree competitor at AAI national Indoor Championships in Belfast at the weekend. Niall ran
4:25.67 in his heat of the 1500m, but failed to advance to the final of the competition.
There was some topclass Irish and International talent on display over the weekend, and it is refreshing to see
so many athletes of all levels taking the opportunity to compete in the wonderful Odyssey venue. No less than 3 new Irish
senior records were set over the weekend with Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC; LJ); Anna Boyle (Ballymena and Antrim; 60m);
and Derval O’Rourke (Leevale AC; 60mH) all achieving new marks. There were new championship records for James Nolan (UCD AC) in the 1500m and Kieran Kelly (Fr Murphy AC) in the SP, while Anthony McCreery (Clonliffe Harriers) equalled the Irish junior pole vault record.
Hopefully, the AAI and the NIAF will continue to hold this competition in Belfast, and that next year more Bree athletes
will be able to take the opportunity to compete against the best in Ireland, and indeed the world.

16/1/06 AAI Indoor Games, Nenagh
Niall Sheil and John Egan went into the AAI Games in Nenagh yesterday with high expectations after both achieved personal bests in the Munster Indoors last weekend.
They did not disappoint. John led the 3,000m walk for ten of the fifteen laps before been overtaken by Irish International Jamie Costin. Jamie was returning to competition after
injuries sustained in a car accident which kept him out of the Athens Olympics. John held on to second place and in the process managed to knock 1 minute off his personal
best for the distance. The fianl result was: 1. Jamie Costin (West Waterford AC; 12:36.34), 2. John Egan (Bree AC; 12:50.32; PB), 3. M Doyle (Cushinstown; 13:31.61). Not to be
out done by his training partner, Niall also returned his second personal best in as many weeks, this time when finishing sixth in the 'B' 1,000m (2:45.75).
