Leinster Senior Medals for Egan and Harding
Just one week before the Irish 20km walk Championships, John Egan showed that he is in good shape winning silver behind training partner David Kidd (SLOT) over 5000m at the Leister Championships on Sunday.  Dave retained his title with 21:30.17, some 26 seconds faster that his winning time 12 months ago, while John again finished second in 22:24.90, 29 seconds faster than this time last year.  Sunday’s race was won by Colin Griffin (Ballinamore AC) who was competing as a guest.  Colin, who is due to compete over 50km at the Olympic Games in Beijing in August, finished in a time of 20:04.29.  Tara’s Michael Doyle won the bronze medal in 23:06.23.

Suzanne Harding was also competing at the Leinster Championships on Sunday, and she picked up bronze in the 800m (2.25.25) behind Kilmore's Fiona Kehoe (2:15.42) and Catriona Jennings (Rathfarnham WSAF; 2:17.08). PB in Podebrady for Egan
Racewalker John Egan (Bree AC), quickly made up for a somewhat disappointing season opener in the Isle of Man 6 weeks ago with a superb outing over 20km in Podebrady (Czech Republic) on Saturday last. John’s recent form in training was rewarded with, not one, but 2 new personal best times. His overall finishing time of 90:55 minutes shaved over 3 ½ minutes for his previous best. Unsurprisingly, such a pace also earned him a 10km personal best (44:45 minutes), and moved him to 12th place on the Irish all time list, a position which he now shares with training partner David Kidd (SLOT). John and Dave walked stride for stride for the entirety of Saturday’s race and finished in joint 21 st place against a competitive International field.
Saturday’s performance moves John and Dave a step closer to their dream of competing at the London 2012 Olympics. To follow their progress please check out their new website:

National Indoor Medals and Championship Best Performances for Bree's Juveniles
The National Indoor championships concluded in Nenagh last weekend and Bree A.C. athletes were in very good form. They won three gold, four silver and five bronze medals between them. On the first weekend, Ciarán Joyce and Tony Stafford won a hat-trick of medals.
Under-13 athlete, Ciarán Joyce, won gold in both the 60m and long jump and the silver medal in the 60m hurdles. Ciarán's jump of 4.84m in the long jump was a national championship best performance, beating the previous record by 11cm.
Ciarán's clean sweep of a possible three national gold medals was denied him by his team-mate, Paddy Devereux, who won the gold medal in the Under-13 60m hurdles. Paddy's win was a championship-best performance with 9.72 seconds.
On the first day of these national championships in Nenagh, Tony Stafford won his first-ever national A.A.I. medal, namely bronze in the Under-15 60m. On the following day he went on to win a further two bronze medals, one in the 60m hurdles and one in the high jump.
Catríona Corcoran, in the high jump, was the other national silver medal winner for Bree A.C. Catríona won this event last year but was delighted with her jump of 155cm. Incidentally, this event was won with a clearance of 164cm.
Sisters, Eleanor and Stephanie Nolan, were the final two bronze medal winners for the club. Stephanie won her bronze medal in the Under-12 high jump with a jump of 120cm, and Eleanor won her bronze in the Under-15 shot putt.
On Saturday last, Shane Byrne won the bronze in the Under-15 walk and on Sunday last the Under-13 relay team of Ciarán Joyce, Paddy Devereux, Cormac Walsh, Shane Doyle and Daniel English won the silver medals. This relay medal brought Ciarán's national medal tally to four over the two weekends and was a second for Paddy following his gold in the hurdles.
Well done to everyone who competed. The full results are available on the

Manx Harriers Open Racewalking Event, Isle of Man, 1st March
Over the years many Olympians have won the Manx Harriers Open Race walking event. With Irish National record holder Robert Heffernan winning in 2000 and 2001 and British record holder Ian McCombie winning in 1986, 1987 and 1988, this race’s Role of Honour really is a Who’s Who of racewalking.
On Saturday, though, it was the turn of possible future Olympians to battle it out for the 2008 title. Cold and blustery conditions put paid to fast times, and John Egan (Bree AC) battled hard to finish 4th in 1:38:00, his second fastest time at the distance. John’s training partner David Kidd (St Laurence O’Tools AC) took the title from top British junior Ben Weirs (Redcar RWC) who was making his debut at the distance. Michael Doyle (Cushionstown AC) finished 3rd
John will be looking to convert his hard training into fast times in the coming months, as he targets the magical 90 minutes for the Olympic distance.

Tony Stafford represented Ireland at the Metro Games in London and returned with gold medals in the sprint, discus and long jump. John Egan gained his first international representation as a member of the victorious Irish team at the Five Nations Race Walking Championships in Denmark in August. This was the first time Ireland has won the annual event. William Spratt-Murphy was a member of the Irish T&F team which was victorious at the Celtic Games hosted at Stormont in August.

So far this year, 119 county, 68 provincial and 16 national individual medals were won by the club. Numerous team medals were also won at county (18), Leinster (20) and All Ireland (5) level.

Busy Weekend for Bree Juveniles
The bankholiday weekend was a busy one for Bree athletes with a number of end-of-season events taking place around the country.

The multi-talanted Catriona Corcoran won Silver in the U15 Pentathlon at the National Combined Event Championships. She scored a total of 2489 points to finish behind Jennifer Murphy (Leevale) who won with 2658 points. Catriona's best events, not surprisingly, were the high jump (1.47 for 588 pts) and the long jump (4.87 for 524 pts). She also achieved new personal best performances in the shot putt (7.98) and the 800m (2:48.7).

Egan helps Ireland to Five Nations Title
John Egan (Bree AC) was competing at his first Interantional event, the 5 Nations Race Walking Cup, in Odense (Denmark) this weekend. He recorded two 4th place finishes, helped Ireland to the team title for the first time, and fought soaring heat and fatigue to record a new personal best over 5000m.

The International competition was decided between Ireland, Switzerland, Denmark, Holland and Belgium on Saturday, with the results of the best two seniors over 20km and the best Junior over 5km from each country contributing to the teams’ overall score.

On paper, it could have been a close affair between the Irish, the Swiss, the Danes and the Dutch, though the toughest competition was always going to come form the Swiss. A win for Paul Fitzpatrick (Shercock AC) in the junior 5km got things off to a good start for the Irish, and it was up to training partners John Egan and David Kidd (St Laurence O’Tools) to consolidate the team title. Both athletes have been in personal best shape of late, but heat and humidity, together with a tight and hilly course, put paid to fast times. Following a tactical race, David finished a solid second and John hung on to 4th place to earn Ireland the team title by the narrowest of margins. Switzerland finished second

On Sunday, the international athletes were invited to take part in the Danish 5000m championships race which was held as part of their National Track & Field Championships. The aim was to raise the profile of race walking in Denmark, and the athletes responded by giving an exhibition of the highest order. With temperatures in the mid twenties and humidity to match, not to mention the fatigue from the previous day, the men would have been forgiven for merely attempting to complete the 12 and a half laps of the track. But racewalkers of made of tougher stuff than that, and an exciting 4-way battle between John, David, Paul, and a Dutch athlete who have been disqualified the previous day ensued. The lead changed a number of times between the Irish trio, but it was David who prevailed at the finish. Paul was second, and the Dutch spoiled the party, with Jacques v. Breman taking 3rd place. John finished 4th, but with far from ideal conditions, recorded a new personal best (22:28.13) over the distance.

John will have learned a lot from his first trip with the Irish team, and his performances at the weekend suggest that there will be many more to come.

Day 3 of National Juvenile Championships
Shane Byrne won his third national gold medal in 12 months adding U14 walk gold to the AAI indoor title that he won in April and the National Community Games title he won in Mosney last August. Shane was a clear winner of the 2,000m event in 11:47.92 with David Manning (St. Joseph's AC) second in 12:21.84. Andrew Furlong finished 4th in a very competitive U15 2,000m walk. His finishing time was 11:16.01.

Shane and Andrew are part of a group of talented walkers in Bree at the moment. John Egan, one of the top ranked seniors in the country, is due to compete for Ireland at a walks event in Denmark next weekend; Elain McCabe has multiple Leinster title and is sure to add national titles in the near future, and Dervla McCabe and Cormac Byrne will represent Bree at the National Community Games finals next month.

The multi-talanted William Spratt-Murphy was the club's only other medal winner on Saturday. He won bronze in the U18 200m in 23.02 seconds to add to the silver he won in the 400mH on the opening weekend of the championships.

Sinead Doyle finished 6th in the U16 discus, while Brendan Culleton was 7th in the U19 200m.

Fifth place for John at AAI National Seniors
John Egan finished 5th in 10,000m walk at the AAI National Senior Championships at the weekend, and picked up two new personal bests on route.

John's time of 45:42.39 minutes knocked 57 seconds off his pervious best for the distance, after going through 5km in 22:29 minutes, which was also a best time. His time was over a minute faster than he did when picking up the silver medal in last year's National - emphasising the strength in depth this time round. The race was won by Robert Heffernan (Togher AC) who holds the Irish record for every distance up to and including the 20km. Colin Griffin (Ballinamore AC), the National 50km record holder, took silver ahead of Jamie Costin (West Waterford AC) who held the 50km record until recently. All three medallists have qualifying times for this year's World Championships and next year's Olympic Games.

John's training partner David Kidd (St Laurence O'Tools) is showing a good return to form of last, and finished ahead of the Bree AC athlete in 4th place. Both will be looking forward to renewing rivalry when they race for Ireland over 20km at the Small Nations Cup in Odense (Denmark) in two weeks time.

Egan has won a medal in this event in 2005 (bronze) and 2006 (silver), but the fact that the athletes who finished ahead of John on this occasion occupy 1st, 3rd, 2nd and 11th place respectively on the Irish All-time list suggest that there is no reason for him to be disappointed with his performance. His time yesterday moves him to 17th on that list, and the ease with which he is setting personal bests these days indicates that the best is yet to come.

Five medals at AAI Juvenile Championships
Bree athletes are very good at clearing barriers! At least that's what the results of days 1 and 2 of the AAI National Juvenile Championships suggest. Bree won five medals over the two days; 4 in the hurdles events and one in the high jump.

Catriona Corcoran won a very closely faught high jump competition in which the first four competitiors cleared 1.50 meters. Catriona's consistency saw her take the title on countback. She also finished 5th in the 250m hurdles and 6th in the long jump (4.78m).

Brendan Cullenton and William Sprat-Murphy have been battling it out over 400m hurdles this summer. Its appropriate, therefore, that both collected silver medals in their respective age groups. Brendan was second in the U19 race in 60.44 seconds, while William ran 58.60 seconds to take second in the U18 category. Brendan followed up with a solid bronze over the sprint hurdles. Aine Doyle also picked up a medal in the sprint hurdles; silver in the U19 girls event (17.58)

Elaine McCabe (U14 2000m walk) and Eleanor Nolan (U14 Shot Putt) just missed out on the medals, both finishing 4th in their events.

International Selection, Two Personal Bests and National Bronze for John
Last weekend John Egan made yet another huge stride forward towards racewalking stardom. After a good winter’s training and a solid second place behind his training partner David Kidd (St Laurence O’Tools) at the Leinster Senior Championships in early June, John started the National 20km Championships confident of something special. John and David have been putting in the hard miles around Curracloe, Carlow and Dublin of late and were sure to push each other to a fast time.

As well as deciding the National 20km medallists, Sunday’s race formed part of the Dublin Grand Prix of racewalking which attracted entrants from across Europe. John and David walked stride for stride from the outset, and by the 5km mark had moved into 5th place overall. They reached 10km in 46:39, a new personal best for John. It wasn’t until 16 km that daylight eventually appeared between Ireland’s two most technically consistent walkers, with the Carlow athlete utilising his greater experience to gain a slight advantage. John remained composed over the final two laps and finished in 94 minutes and 28 seconds, a personal best by almost seven and a half minutes. This put him in 5th place overall and earned him national bronze behind Colin Griffin (Ballinamore AC) in 1st and David in 4th. Athletes from Britain and Italy filled 2nd and 3rd spot respectively.

National 20km meadlists (from L to R) David Kidd 2nd, Colin Griffin 1st, John Egan 3rd, Michael Heery (President AAI)

John’s time not only obliterates his previous personal best set in 2005, but moves him from 30th to 15th on the Irish all-time list. It also caught the eye of International selectors, as John received news on Saturday that both he and David have been selected to represent Ireland at the Small Nations Challenge to be held in Denmark at the beginning of August. At the age of 25, this is John’s first International selection, and no doubt many more will follow. His personal best at 10km suggests that we can expect some fireworks when he races over that distance at the National Senior T&F championships in July.

John’s sister Elizabeth won gold in the steeplechase at the Ulster & Northern Ireland Championships on the same weekend.

John is 4th at AAI Games
John Egan made the long trip to Sligo for this years AAI Games, where he competed in the 5,000m walk. Having suffered from a cold all week, John was happy just to be on the starting line. He managed to finish 4th in a competitive feild which was lead home by recent Irish 50km record breaker Colin Griffin and John's training partner David Kidd. John's finishing time was 23.08 minutes, which, giving the windy conditions, was a solid start to the outdoor season. Leinster Schools Championships, Day 1
The Leinster Schools Championships got off to a good start for Bree athletes yesterday with medals for Catriona Corcoran, Aine Doyle and William Spratt Murphy.

Catriona Corcoran (Loreto Wexford) won the Junior girls long jump with 4.96 meters. Her win was a lot closer than her 30cm winning margin last year, with her Loreto team mate E. Duggan just 3cm behind on this occasion. R Ni Dhiermede (Gael Col Car) was 3rd with 4.42 meters. Catriona also finished 3rd in the high jump with a clearance of 1.48 meters.

William Spratt-Murphy (CBS Enniscorthy) was a clear winner of the Intermediate boys 400m Hurdles, improving on the bronze medal he won last year. William's winning time was 60.74 seconds.

At the same event last year Aine Doyle (Loreto Wexford) was unlucky to leave without a medal, having finished 4th in both hurdles events. Finishing 4th in the 400m hurdles again this time around, things looked ominous for Aine. Her luck was soon to change however, as a solid performance earned her 2nd place in the shorter event in which she ran 17.44 seconds.

Catriona, William and Aine, have all earned their place in the line up of the All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore in two weeks time.

Egan 5th at National Championships
John Egan was our sole representative at this year's National Senior Indoor Championships which were held in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast at the weekend. Following a huge PB over 5,000m and consistent performances at 3,000m earlier this winter, John had high hopes of a medal in this competition; the only domestic trach Championship in which he has not already brought away some silverware. On this occasion a medal was not to be, despite shaving 3 seconds off his personal best for the distance. He finished in 22:44.12 mins, behind Irish record holder Robert Heffernan (19:11.58), former university team mate Colin Griffin (19:36.42), Brendan Boyce who won his first national senior medal (22:27.93), and training partner David Kidd (22:31.64). It was a hugely competitive race with international guest competitiors from Spain and Slovakia taking part alongside one of the highest quality domestic fields of recent years.

Leinster Multievent Championships, Navan, 27th May
Bree AC had 3 athletes competing at the Leinster Multievents Championships in Navan yesterday, and all three won gold medals.

Catriona Corcoran rounded off an excellent month in which she won 5 county titles, 2 Leinster schools titles and two Leinster club relay medals, to win the under 14 girls pentathlon. Catriona's winning score was 2581, 126 points clear of runner-up Laura Langton (Kilkenny City Harriers). Catriona won the long jump (4.82) and the high jump (1.42), the two events that she won at Leinster schools championships last week, as well as the shot putt (9.83), though she her best performance from a scoring point of view was the hurdles in which she finished second to Laura, the new Leinster schools hurdles champion. Like all true multieventers, the 800m was Catriona's weakest event by her own very high standards.

Áine Doyle and Brendan Culleton, who also showed great form at the recent county championships, took their respective U18 titles. With wins in the 100m hurdles (17.2) and 200m (28.6), Áine's score of 2715, took her well clear of Emer McTaggert (Boyne AC). Brendan secured his third successive Leinster title when he won the U18 boys octathlon. Brendan's best events were the hurdles (14.8); 200m (23.9) and the 1000m (2:58.5) and he will now hope to add to the All Ireland U16 title he won in 2004.

The All Ireland multi events championships will take place in Tullamore on 29th and 30th of July and no doubt both Áine and Brendan will be glad that their events will be held over two days on that occasion.

Also on Saturday, Niall Sheil, representing Permenant TSB Gorey, was a class above his colleagues when he easily won both the 800m and the 1500m at an interfirm track meet in Kilkenny.

Leinster Schools Championships Day 1, Santry, 17th May
The first day of the Leinster Schools were held in Santry on Wednesday and Bree AC athletes were once again to the fore. Five medals were won by members of the club in what is one of the most competitive championships for athletes of this age. The highlight of the day was Caitriona Corcoran’s double gold in the minor High Jump and Long Jump. Caitriona, (Loreto Wexford), was a clear winner of both events, jumping 4.62 to win the LJ by a whopping 30 centimetres and winning the HJ by 3 centimetres with a clearance of 1.44. Former Bree AC athlete Clara Thompson won double gold in the discus and shot putt at all five Leinster Schools championships between 1993 and 1997. Perhaps Caitriona can go on to emulate Clara’s achievements at this level!

Sarah Shovlin (Loreto Wexford) was joint 2nd in the junior High Jump with a clearance of 1.44 and Ciara Flanagan (Coláiste Bríd Enniscorthy) finished 3rd in the junior girls hammer. Both have qualified for the All Ireland Schools Championships in Tullamore on 3rd June

William Spratt-Murphy (St Mary’s CBS Enniscorthy) did well given the circumstances to finish 3rd in the Intermediate 400mH, but will be disappointed that illness prevented him from finishing in the top two and qualifying for the All Ireland Finals. William will be competing in the 200m on Saturday.

Áine Doyle (Loreto Wexford) finished just outside the medals in 4th place in both the 100m hurdles and the 400m hurdles in the senior age category. Sinéad Moloney (Coláiste Bríd Enniscorthy) was 5th in the Intermediate girls 80m Hurdles.

Elsewhere, on Wednesday evening, Niall Sheil ran 4:21.89 to finish 5th in the ‘B’ 1500m, at the Dublin Graded Meet in Ringsend. This is a good performance from Niall, in what were far from ideal conditions for fast times. Niall runs the 800m at the AAI Games in Ringsend on Sunday. Full Results

County Championships Results
Well done to the many athletes from the club who won medals at the county championships recently. Fourty-five Bree AC athletes won individual medals and many more were involved in the club's successful relay teams. Bree won 15 of the 18 relays contested. It was a particularly good championships for Áine Doyle who won eight U18 titles and for Caitriona Corcoran (U14), William Spratt-Murphy (U17) and Brendan Culleton (U18) who each collected 5 individual gold medals in their age categories. The small numbers in the U17, U18 and U19 categories is, however, of great concern for the future of athletics in Wexford. Áine, William, Brendan, Claire Farrell, Sinead Moloney and Anna Nolan also picked up medals at senior level. There was a Bree clean sweep in the U13 girls LJ, the U15 girls 100m, 200m, Javelin and discus, the U19 girls hammer throw and the senior women’s 200m and hammer throw.

Upcoming Leinster Championships
The 2006 Leinster Track & Field Championships get underway this weekend with the juvenile relay championships in Kilkenny. The club will be hoping to add to the 48 relay titles they have already won since 1981 and to retain the Hehir Shield they have won for the best club at the championships for the past three years. The club have 15 teams entered for Sunday. Last year they took 7 sets of gold medals, 2 silver and 1 bronze; the U17 boys 4 x 100m, U19 boys 4 x 400m and U19 boys 4 x 100m went on to win medals at All Ireland level. Some interesting facts:

The following weekend, the multi-event championships, the U12 and U13 championships and the Junior and U23 championships will be held in Navan and we hope to be well represented in all three championships.

The club has been particularly successful in the multi-events over the past few years. Brendan Culleton will hope to add to the U16 title he won in 2004 and the U17 title he won in 2005. Sinéad Moloney, the current indoor U18 champion will hope to improve on her U16 bronze medal from last year. Aine Doyle and Catriona Corcoran also won medals at this year's All Ireland indoor multi-events championships and should do well.

  • The club has won 36 medals at these championships, 13 of them gold.
  • Athletes from the club have also won 12 All Ireland multi-events medals, 5 of them gold, since Elizabeth Egan won the club's first (U17 gold) in 1996.

The senior and Masters Championships will be held in Tullamore on 4th June. Niall Sheil has been entered in both the 800m and 1500m and may double up, while John Egan will be aiming to improve on the bronze medal he won in the 5,000m walk last year. If you would also like to take part, contact Eliz for further details.

The U9-U11 Award Scheme will be held in St. Abbain's on Sunday 11th June, the U14-U19 Championships in Tullamore on 17th and 18th of June and the Juvenile team event for U11, U12, U13 and U15s in Kilkenny on Sunday June 25th. The club were best club at the U9-U11 Award Scheme last year. If you would like to take part in any of these events contact Clare, Paul or Una.

A full Programme of events for the Leinster Championships is available on the Athletics Leinster Website. Note that there have been some changes to this years events. The Steeplechase has been added for U18, U19, Junior and Senior women and will be held as a combined race in Navan on 28th May. Full details of changes to Leinster Championships

These facts and figures used in this article are based on results that we have collated, and while every attempt is made to ensure the accuracy of these results, details from the early years of the club may be missing. Check out the Archived Results section on this page, and if you can help with verifying results or providing missing results, please contact the webmaster.

Race opportunities for Senior Athletes
There are lots of races coming up for senior athletes. The season kicks off with the AAI Games in Ringsend on Sunday. The Leinster, Munster and Ulster Senior Championships are open events, and with electronic timing and wind readings available, they provide ideal opportunity to record official personal bests or to break a
club record. Last year John Egan won medals at all 3 championships and he will be hoping to repeat that feat this year. The Leinster Senior and Vet Championships take place in Tullamore on 4th June (More Details), the Northern Ireland and Ulster Championships will be held on 10th June at Mary Peters in Belfast (More Details) and on 18th June the Munster Senior Championships will be staged at CIT Track in Cork (More Details). The Leinster Junior and U23 Championships will be held in Navan next weekend (21st May). If you would like to take part in any of these events please contact Eliz for further details.

The National Junior and U23 Championships will be in Tullamore on 2nd July and the National Senior Championships in Santry on 22nd and 23rd of July. John Egan, will again be aiming for a podium finish in the national senior 10km walk. A full preview of these events will be posted once entries have been finalised. Other senior championship dates include: National Multi Event Championships, Navan 10-11 June; National Senior Relay Championships, Navan, 11th June and Dublin International Games, Santry, 29th July. The domestic season will draw to a close with the National League Finals in Tullamore on 20th of August. If you are available to compete on 16th July of 6th of August and would like to help Wexford reach these finals, please let us know.

Dublin Athletics Board hold open graded meets every second Wednesday night and these provided a good opportunity for athletes of all abilities to assess their form. Further details and timetables can be found on the Dublin Athletics Website. The Irish Milers Club and Northern Ireland Athletics Federation also host graded meets for all abilities. There will be plenty of road races over various distances around the country during the summer, and lots of open races in the UK for anyone short of competition. Check out the Fixtures Page for more details.

For the more ambitious among us, the IAAF World Junior Championships will be held in Beijing in August (Entry Standards) and the EAA European Senior Championships will be in Gothenburg, Sweden from 7th to 13th of August (Entry Standards).

FIFA World Cup Club Fundraiser
Unfortunately Ireland will not be heading to Germany for this year's World Cup, but Bree AC are offering you an opportunity to get involved in the action, with our club fundraiser. With prizes of 300 euro, 200 euro and 100 euro on offer for the individuals who most closly predict the outcome of Germany 2006, this is an ideal opportunity to be part of the 'football fever' and help raise funds for the club. Entry costs just 5 euro. The squads have been selected and its less than a month untill kick off; now is the time to get involved. Entry cards are available from any club member or from Eliz, Clare, Pat or Paul. All cards must be returned to the organisers by 4th of June.
